Microchipping: How Does it Work?

A microchip is a small device no bigger than a grain of rice. It is implanted under the skin, typically between the shoulder blades. It is placed by injecting it under the skin, just like how vaccines are administered.

Each Microchip has it’s own individual ID number which will be registered to that specific pet. When the Microchip is registered by one of our staff members, your contact information will be entered. This way, if your pet were to every runaway, and is brought into an animal shelter, animal hospital or the pound, they are scanned for a Microchip. When the number is read, that staff member will contact the Microchip company and your contact information will be given out to that person.
A frequently asked question is ” Is a Microchip like a GPS?”. Unfortunately not. Although this would be pretty cool, our technology has not advanced this far yet! Maybe someday we will be able to track our pets every move!

As some of you may know, we held a “Microchip Clinic” in April of this year at the Hospital. We will be holding another clinic sometime in October 2016. Keep an eye out for our ads! They will be 25$ each, cash only, and the money raised will going towards the Farley Foundation.
